World Drowning Prevention Day 2025 – Anyone can drown, no one should

World Drowning Prevention Day - Become a Swim Teacher (4)

Globally, more than 300,000 people drown every year. In Australia, drowning takes hundreds of lives annually—often children and young people. It’s a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy.

Today Friday 25 July, join AUSTSWIM, Royal Life Saving Australia, and communities around the world in taking action this World Drowning Prevention Day

We know that education saves lives, and at the heart of that education are qualified swimming teachers. They teach vital water safety and swimming skills that last a lifetime.

Ways you can help prevent drowning:

  • Enrol yourself or your child in swimming lessons
  • Always actively supervise children around water
  • Check your pool barrier and gate regularly
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs near water
  • Wear a lifejacket on the water
  • Know the conditions before swimming
  • Learn CPR
  • Train to become a swimming teacher or pool lifeguard – and teach skills that save lives
Every swim teacher. Every lesson. Every life saved.
